Play therapy

Play therapy is an evidence-based psychotherapeutic intervention for children.  In 'non-directive play therapy' the child is able to choose their play throughout the session. The therapist responds empathically to whatever emotion or experience is 'played out' or 're-enacted' during the session and their feelings are accepted, and explored in a way that allows them to be processed.  Children can experience  this whilst having fun - all good for wellbeing! Items available include sand tray and figurines, sensory items, role play items. creative items such as paints, nurturing toys including dolls houses,  games, lego, and construction toys.  To learn more about play therapy  please view the British Association of Play Therapists website (BAPT) . Please also contact me to discuss further.

Therapeutic life story work

Mainly used for fostered or adopted children, this intervention helps children understand their life story. It assists them in processing the feelings associated with their past, and how this may be contributing to their feelings in the present. This work  involves the caregiver also, with the aim of strengthening their attachment. The hope is that this will foster a deeper sense of self-awareness and emotional integration. This piece of work will be discussed as separate to play therapy.

Support for Parents:

These are 1:1 sessions for caregivers with the therapist to help them understand how trauma can affect children. and how play therapy can help.  These sessions develop effective support techniques for parents, using informed methods from play therapy, and theraplay, thereby offering crucial caregiver support. Sometimes this can is called psychoeducation.
